The European project faces one of the biggest crises in its history. Some would trace this back to the Maastricht treaty.

Was it a mistake to accelerate the project of European monetary union, without political union, at the end of the Cold War? What are the deeper historical causes of this profound crisis? How does historical reflection inform our judgement on the chances of another chapter of European integration once again being written under the generic title "progress through crisis"?

De Universiteit Maastricht is een universiteit die zich van andere Nederlandse universiteiten onderscheidt door het Maastrichtse onderwijsmodel Probleemgestuurd Onderwijs (PGO). Bij PGO staat het leren aan de hand van uitdagende, open-einde problemen centraal en werken studenten in kleine collaboratieve groepen samen. De docent neemt binnen dit systeem de rol van facilitator aan. De internationale oriëntatie van de UM is een ander kenmerkend aspect van deze universiteit.

De Universiteit Maastricht (UM) werd in 1976 als Rijksuniversiteit Limburg (RL) opgericht. Het is hiermee de jongste universiteit van Nederland die van rijkswege wordt gefinancierd. Er werd begonnen met een medische faculteit. Dit om in de regio nieuwe werkgelegenheid te creëren na de sluiting van de Limburgse mijnen. Tegenwoordig betstaat de UM uit zes faculteiten met in totaal ruim 12.000 studenten.
