Serbia Votes 2012, Tadic vs. Nikolic again!?

The electoral campaigns of the Serbian political parties are in full swing as they are preparing for national and presidential elections on Sunday 6 May. The stakes are high, with economic reform, rising unemployment, accession to the European Union and the status of Kosovo topping the agenda’s of the parties. The progressive, pro-European outgoing president Boris Tadic of the ruling Democratic Party (DS) and the conservative, nationalist Tomislav Nikolic, leader of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), are in a neck and neck race. The outcome of the elections and the formation of a new coalition are of great importance to both the cooperation with the EU in the accession process and the stance the country will take towards Kosovo. The ‘Alfred Mozer Stichting’ and the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ organise a public debate on the elections in Serbia on Wednesday 9 May 2012. In two panel discussions experts will analyse the election results, discuss possible coalitions and present their views on the consequences for the position of Serbia in the region and the EU accession process.
