Come to the European Council's and the Council's Open Day on Saturday 12 May from 10 am to 6 pm and discover how these institutions work. You will be able to explore the Justus Lipsius building, where the leaders and government ministers of the 27 Member States take decisions. The place to be is in the heart of Brussel's European quarter, close to Schuman Square.
The Open Day is held each year around the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950, and the EU institutions in Brussels open their doors in a joint "Festival of Europe".
An absolute must on the Open Day is the guided tour (start of the last guided tour: 5.15 pm). Visitors will be able to see the meeting rooms where the ministers and leaders of the 27 EU countries decide on EU legislation and policies, whilst the corridors of the building feature an interesting collection of artefacts. There will be tours in French, Dutch, German and English.
More detailed information about various aspects of the EU will be available at numerous information stands, where brochures and publications will be distributed on various topics, such as Europe's foreign and security policy and the area of freedom, security and justice. In addition to information on the Galileo programme, a model of one of the satellites currently in orbit will be on display. A stand of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU will be focused on the environment, while the future Cypriot presidency will highlight island tourism.
Herman Van Rompuy, the President of the European Council, will be there and visit the stands.
A public debate, "Governance of the euro area", will be held from 4.30 pm in the press room; interpretation will be provided in four languages (FR/ NL/DE/EN). Please note that registration is required for this event via our website.

In deze instelling van de Europese Unie (kortweg 'de Raad van Ministers' of nog korter 'de Raad' genoemd) zijn de regeringen van de 27 lidstaten van de EU vertegenwoordigd. De Raad oefent samen met het Europees Parlement de wetgevings- en begrotingstaak uit. Dit houdt in dat de Raad haar goedkeuring moet geven aan elk wetsvoorstel van de Europese Commissie en aan elke voorgestelde EU-begroting. Nationale regeringen kunnen dus via de Raad invloed uitoefenen in de EU. De Raad neemt ook beslissingen over het buitenlands en veiligheidsbeleid.
Dit orgaan bestaat uit de regeringsleiders van de 27 lidstaten van de Europese Unie, de vaste voorzitter en de voorzitter van de Europese Commissie. De Hoge Vertegenwoordiger voor het gemeenschappelijk buitenlands en veiligheidsbeleid woont de bijeenkomsten van de Europese Raad ook bij. Alleen de regeringsleiders hebben stemrecht tijdens de vergaderingen. De Europese Raad komt minstens vier keer per jaar bijeen om de algemene politieke beleidslijnen vast te stellen.
