Τhe reliable operation of national accreditation bodies represents a basic prerequisite for the operation of the Single Market. The Multilateral Agreement Council of the European cooperation for Acccreditation (EA MAC) is the competent body for the realisation of this task. Representatives from all national accreditation bodies as well as other interested intitutions attend the meetings.

Van 1 juli tot en met 31 december 2012 vervulde Cyprus het voorzitterschap van de Europese Unie. Het Cypriotisch voorzitterschap werkte nauw samen met de vorige twee voorzitterschappen: Polen en Denemarken. Deze drie landen vormden samen een 'trojka' (of trio) van opeenvolgend voorzittende landen. Ze hadden samen een programma voor de hele periode opgesteld.
